Syria has reached a critical phase - one that requires all of the prayer and devotion we can offer, especially in the sudden current political change.
Over a decade of civil war, international intervention and proxy wars have left Syrian citizens in a bad shape on every possible level: socially, economically and psychologically.
Today, we woke up to a drastic new reality. One that simply occurred out of nowhere presenting a brand new Syria. Naturally, there is a state of confusion caused by the ambiguity of any new leadership that is to come. What are their motivations? What are their policies? How will they bring together the diverse cultural, religious and social fabric of Syria?
With so many things changing so quickly, many Christians in Syria are wondering what the outcome of such a millitary coup entails for their faith and their witness. This week, in the midst of all the drastic changes that were occurring, our congregation in Jaramana-Damascus, like many of the locals, were afraid of the unknown and frankly expecting the worst.
We thank God that this political transition came in peacefully, where many promises are and still being made for a better Syria. There's no doubt that the road ahead will be difficult.
We can bring this pivotal moment in Syria's history to God, with all of the unknowns and uncertainties of our human understanding.
We can pray for Syria, for its people and that the ongoing changes are for their best interests.
We can pray for the church, the "living stones" in this land, and especially for our church in Jaramana.
We can pray for lasting peace in Syria and in the surrounding countries. May we be an example to the world that peace can happen, even in places where it seems impossible.
We pray into the political situation, especially for those who are now entrusted with leadership through this transitional period. We pray for free and democratic elections that are driven by values of enthusiasm, hope, and love to build a better Syria for everyone.
Finally, we ask and pray for Jesus through this advent season, so that He may fill our hearts with His heavenly peace, spreading the good news of heaven through His church in our region. May we all have a blessed Merry Christmas.
