Severe rains and flooding have overwhelmed parts of northern Morocco, forcing one of the largest evacuations in recent memory.
Authorities have evacuated more than 143,000 residents from flood‑prone areas, including much of the city of Ksar El Kebir — where up to 85 % of the population had to leave their homes amid rising waters and landslides.
Storm‑related flooding has so far killed at least four people, including three children and a man in his 30s whose vehicle was swept away near Tétouan, while another person remains missing as rivers and low‑lying areas remain inundated.
Local officials say more than 150,000 people are now displaced, sheltering in temporary camps or with relatives, as floodwaters continue to threaten homes and infrastructure.
The torrential rains — part of a series of powerful storms including Storm Leonardo and Storm Marta — came after years of drought, filling reservoirs but also overwhelming drainage systems and dams that had been nearing capacity.
For many families, the floods are not just short‑term hardship but a profound loss of security and stability. Roads, farmland, and homes have been damaged, leaving livelihoods in jeopardy even as emergency services race to reach isolated communities.
