Whakapapa and history are important threads in the Anglican tapestry.
I haven't been part of the Anglican world for long, but in the short time I have, I've learnt that whakapapa and history are important threads in the Anglican tapestry.
I've seen it in the pictures and paintings adorning parish walls. I've seen in the architecture and beauty of historic parish buildings. I've definitely seen it in the Anglican Missions storeroom when I'm trying to find a pen or a stapler amongst binders full of old photos and newsletters.
Most importantly, I've seen it in the people that make up the church.
I'm 35, so I hope I've got a few more years left in front of me! However, as I was pondering the idea of legacy, it occurred to me that each of us, in a way, is responsible in writing our own histories before we leave. Every action we take, every decision we make, every hand we shake become words: words that form sentences, sentences that form paragraphs and paragraphs which fill out the story of our lives.
This year, Anglican Missions is launching a bequests programme, which is a way for you to continue adding to that story for generations to come.
We're grateful for every dollar given to us. Money is a way we can actively put the love of God into action, tangibly, for those who need help the most. It lets us drill wells, purchase food and build shelter. Your bequest will allow us to keep doing that on your behalf well into the future.
But... we're even more grateful for you! Your story makes the Anglican Missions tapestry so much more rich and detailed. It's not just Anglican Missions though. The story of ordinary people is what adorns the pages of scripture. People empowered by God's Holy Spirit to reach the desperate, lost, hungry, tired, naked and poor.
That's what motivates us, and what we hope motivates you. In the Gospel of Matthew (6:20-21), Jesus talks about our human possessions as fleeting and fragile:
“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Consider your story, your whakapapa. What do you value? Where is your treasure? If you feel led to leave a legacy through Anglican Missions, give Rowena Bonnè a call (04 473 5172) or email. She's a great listener and can offer some next steps on how to make this happen.
Thank you for your continued support of Anglican Missions. We're glad to be part of your team.
